Will treatment hurt?

Osteopaths undergo a thorough and extensive training to become qualified and entered on the General Osteopathic Council's register. This extensive training and post graduate experience helps to reduce the likelihood of adding to the pre-existing pain that you present for treatment with.

However according to research about 20% (1 in 5) can experience a short term increase in pain which usually eases after a day or two .  Around 55% (just over half) will feel a good deal better; on average around 30% better by day two following treatment.

My general impression of treatment responses reported back to me in day to day practice (I have yet to carry out a clinical audit in this area) is that most patients feel definite improvement following treatment both immediatly and over the next day or two.  Some  experience little or no change, and in line with the research above about 1 in 5 can experience an increase in symptoms for a day or two following treatment. This is often as a result of working on already very painful and inflamed areas. More often than not any increase in pain/ discomfort/stiffness settles within a couple of days, commonly followed by an improvement in symptoms.

What Can Be Treated?

Osteopaths have traditionally treated a widespread number of muscle and joint problems.Osteopaths are particularly associated with treating spinal pain and problems, especially low back and neck pain and restriction. A lot of conditions have traditionally been treated successfully by osteopaths having learned hands on treatment approaches and techniques that were found to be effective over many decades. A selection of conditions/problems can be found on the Home page and the What We Treat section. Claims for what can be treated on websites, and other promotional material is legally governed by the ASA (Advertising Standards Agency). Professional oversight for such compliance in regard to ASA guidlines rests with the General Osteopathic Council and all areas on the Home page and What We Can Treat section have been agreed as acceptable by the ASA. There is currently a drive by the osteopathic profession to carry out high quality research in regards to what osteopathy can effectively treat. As the evidence base for effective osteopathc treatment grows more and more conditions/problems are added to the list of what the ASA permits as evidence based claims.
